The ADEPA 2025 awards for journalistic excellence were presented: LA NACION, the most awarded media outlet
This morning, the Association of Argentine Journalistic Entities (ADEPA) presented the 2025 ADEPA Journalism Awards at the headquarters of the Argentine Catholic University (UCA) in Puerto Madero. The ceremony brought together representatives from media outlets across the country and recognized the most outstanding work of the year. The institution's authorities, including Dr. José Claudio Escribano, president of the association's awards committee and former deputy director of LA NACION, celebrated the quality and commitment of Argentine journalism. “This is an important morning for all of us here, for the award winners for the recognition of their professional performance,” Escribano began his opening remarks at the ceremony. For ADEPA, because it demonstrates once again the extraordinary appeal and prestige it has enjoyed throughout its 63 years of existence. In this edition of the awards, 1,458 works and 792 authors were submitted. These are facts that are virtually unparalleled in academic circles or institutions that have a section dedicated to recognizing the best," he added. During his speech, Escribano highlighted some of the crucial issues facing the profession today, “the best job in the world” according to García Márquez, whom he, like Carlos Fuentes, another great writer of the Latin American Boom, quoted in a couple of anecdotes with which he opened the ceremony. He referred to freedom of expression and the threats posed by government measures that seek to criminalize it. “We must prepare for the introduction of amendments to the Penal Code in chapters,” warned the former deputy director of LA NACION. He also raised the dilemmas that accompany technological development and artificial intelligence. “Times have changed a lot,” he acknowledged. "Among the award winners are articles that a few decades ago would not even have been thought of, dedicated to fake news. There is even a piece that exposes situations that escalate to the point of perversion, of a teenage girl who was humiliated by a classmate who used AI. An absolutely unacceptable situation that in the past would have been impossible,“ he explained. Escribano stressed the importance of journalism in revealing these new processes that are now the subject of public debate. ”For the eleventh consecutive year, LA NACION was the most awarded media outlet, with recognition in several categories of the competition. It won 11 first prizes and eight second prizes, as well as three special mentions. In doing so, she reaffirmed her leadership and commitment to professional excellence. LA NACION Deputy Editor-in-Chief Gail Scriven, who won the Press Freedom category for two analytical pieces on the offensive against the press by world leaders such as Donald Trump in the United States and Viktor Orbán in Hungary, spoke of the risks to democracy when journalists are considered “enemies.” “Trump has been perfecting his ‘manual’ since before he even took office,” she said. “We recently learned that the official White House website has a blacklist of journalists and media outlets,” Scriven said. Diego Cabot, Deputy Editor, won first place in the Economy category for his special report on the unfinished Perón Highway, which runs north to south through a huge section of the western part of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. "Last year, we went with Matías Boela, a colleague with whom I have traveled extensively, and we showed the neglect of a public works project that has been abandoned for 30 years. A highway, believe it or not, there are people living in the fast lane," recalled the journalist, this time in his role as a reporter. Lorena Oliva, a journalist in the Community section, was awarded first place in the Children and Adolescents category for her article on bullying in secondary schools through the use of AI to alter photographs. She addressed the issue through the story of Lucía, an Argentine girl who was a victim of this practice. “I want to dedicate this award to the protagonist of this story. Her case was the catalyst for the Ministry of Education of the City of Buenos Aires to develop a protocol for dealing with these cases.” Vanesa Valenti won the award in the Sports category for her interview with Olympic medalist Eugenia Bosco, who reported her former coach for abuse when she was 12 years old. Finally, LA NACION documentary filmmaker Cecilia Miljiker received the award on behalf of Nicolás Cassese, Florencia Fernández Blanco, Fernando Massa, Florencia Abd, Pablo Loscri, Julia Rouaux, Aníbal Greco, Tomás Cuesta, Matías Aimar, and Florencia Rodríguez Altube. “Behind S.O.S. Animales Argentinos was a huge team led by Nicolás Cassese. And I always take the opportunity to thank LA NACION, because it was a complex project and it is difficult to achieve the level we reached,” said Miljiker. The ADEPA awards are in addition to the awards received so far in 2025. In August, Grupo de Diarios América (GDA) awarded LA NACION three prizes for the editorial proposal of FuturIA, the series Atrapados en las Redes (Trapped in the Networks), and the multiplatform production of S.O.S. Argentine Animals."In addition, in May, the World Association of News Publishers (WAN IFRA) awarded LA NACION in the category of Best Use of Artificial Intelligence in Newsrooms in an international competition that brought together entries from the Americas, Europe, South Asia, Asia Pacific, and Africa. The winning production was Así nos habló Milei: 9 trucos del relato libertario para construir un nuevo sentido común (This is how Milei spoke to us: 9 tricks of the libertarian narrative to build a new common sense), an AI development to investigate presidential logic with the help of new technologies. In the Americas chapter of WAN IFRA, LA NACION won in four categories: Best Digital Journalism Project and Best Use of Video for the production S.O.S Animales Argentinos (S.O.S. Argentine Animals), Best Project with Social Impact for the series Atrapados en las redes (Trapped in the Networks), and Best Use of AI for the work on Milei's speeches, which later also won at the global level. This year, LA NACION also won the King of Spain Award for a documentary on Mama Antula, noted for its cultural and narrative excellence. “With one gold medal, one bronze medal, and 26 distinctions for its digital and print productions, LA NACION was the most awarded Spanish-language media outlet by the Society for News Design (SND) in 2025.”
