“My mom, at my age, already had my brother and me.” That sentence sums up a generational shift that’s plain to see. Having a child at age 25—something more common a few decades ago—is a distant reality for many young people today. “Some couples wait longer, others have fewer children, and there are even those who decide not to have any at all. Taken individually, these are personal decisions that are difficult to quantify, but collectively they tell a different story.” For much of the last thirty years, the fertility rate had been declining slowly. In 1990, the rate was three children per woman, and in 2014, it still stood at 2.4. From there, the decline began to accelerate. “By 2024—in just ten years—the rate had fallen to 1.2 children per woman, the lowest on record. “If we go back to the 19th century, the fertility rate was seven children per woman. This trend is part of a global phenomenon that is unfolding at different paces across much of the world,” explains Daniel Schteingart, director of Productive Development and curator of Argendata at Fundar.” Changes in how people start families are the focus of the third in a series of four articles, a collaboration between LA NACION and Fundar that explores a less visible side of Argentina: the social transformations quietly taking place among the younger generations and reshaping the way young people work, live, make decisions, and envision the future. The series seeks to understand not only the country we are, but also the one we are building. “Along the way, Argentina also crossed an important threshold. In 2017, the fertility rate fell below 2.1 children per woman—the level associated with generational replacement.” To understand this decline, we must look at the age at which women are having children today. That’s where the first change becomes apparent. Motherhood isn’t disappearing; rather, it’s being postponed. In 2001, 41.2% of women aged 20 to 24 had already become mothers. In 2010, the proportion was nearly identical, at 41.3%. But by 2022, it had already fallen to 31.2%. Becoming a mother before age 25 has become much less common. “The flip side of the postponement of motherhood is that the number of ‘neither-nor’ women is declining,” notes Schteingart. In 2014, 31% of young women were neither studying nor working; today that proportion is 25%. “The change also extends to women of other ages. In 2014, 50% of women over the age of 18 were working or looking for work; today, that figure is 56%. And the share of women among all employed people rose from 41.7% to 44.2%, after years in which it had remained around 41%. “Delaying motherhood and having fewer children helps explain this increase, but the relationship also works the other way around: many women today prioritize their education, their work, or their personal projects, and only have children later.”
