Rob Reiner: These are the seven key films that form part of his legacy.
The film Spinal Tap II: The End Continues was released in September 2025. Its director, Rob Reiner, never imagined that this would be his last film. With more than 20 productions behind him as a director and as many as an actor, as well as ventures into television, Reiner carved out a career in show business until his tragic death last Sunday. According to the film and television review and rating site Rotten Tomatoes, these are his seven highest-rated and best-reviewed films. Want to know what they are? 1. This Is Spinal Tap (1984) Filmed as a mockumentary, this comedy chronicles the experiences of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap. The film stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer. Reiner plays Martin “Marty” DiBergi, a documentary filmmaker who follows the band on their U.S. tour. The film satirizes the behavior and musical pretensions of rock bands and the hagiographic tendencies of documentaries of the time. 2. – ‘The Princess Bride’ (1987) This production is an adventure and fantasy comedy. It is adapted from William Goldman's novel of the same name. It tells the story of a farmer named Westley (Cary Elwes) and his quest to rescue Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright) from the evil Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon). The film retains the metafictional narrative style of the novel by presenting the story as a book read by a grandfather to his sick grandson. 3. Stand By Me (1986) The film focuses on the transition from childhood to adulthood. Based on the novel ‘The Body’ written by Stephen King, the film is set in 1959 in the fictional town of Castle Rock, where four boys, played by Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell, discover the body of a missing minor during a trip. 4. 'Misery' (1990) This film combines suspense and psychological horror. It is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. After a car accident, novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is rescued by former nurse Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), who turns out to be an obsessive fan of Sheldon's work and makes his life impossible. Thanks to her brilliant performance, Bates won several awards, including Best Actress at the Oscars. 5. The American President (1995) This film is a romantic comedy-drama that chronicles the relationship between US President Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) and environmental lawyer Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening). The cast is rounded out by Martin Sheen and Michael J. Fox and Richard Dreyfuss, who appear in supporting roles. 6. When Harry Met Sally... (1989) This touching and funny film set a new standard for romantic comedies. The story of Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) begins in 1977 when they meet while sharing a trip from Chicago to New York. Then, after twelve years of chance encounters in New York, they must answer the question: “Can men and women just be friends?” 7. 'A Few Good Men' (1992) This courtroom drama centers on Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise), a military lawyer who must defend two U.S. Marines accused of murdering a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. Although Kaffee is known for seeking plea bargains, a colleague, Lieutenant Joanne Galloway (Demi Moore), convinces him that the accused Marines were likely following orders from a commanding officer: Colonel Nathan R. Jessep (Jack Nicholson).
