Russia begins evacuation flights from Cuba that Cuban nationals will not be allowed to board

Rossiya and Nordwind airlines began operating a series of flights from Cuba on Thursday to evacuate Russian citizens currently on the island, after confirming the cancellation of regular operations from February 24, Aviacionline reported. With the suspension of flights from Russia, Cuba loses its second largest source of tourists in the same week. A few days ago, Canadian airlines WestJet, Air Transat, Sunwing, and Air Canada announced that they were ceasing to cover routes to the island due to a lack of fuel at Cuban airports. According to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR), there are currently around 4,000 Russian tourists in Cuba. To meet demand, Rossiya has organized six flights between Varadero and Moscow. The first departed from the island on Thursday, February 12. The next flights are scheduled for the 14th, 17th, 19th, and 21st of this month. In addition, on the 16th there will be a flight from Havana to Moscow, which is so far the only one scheduled between the two capitals. Cuban nationals will not be allowed on these flights, according to Oreanda News. Although operations between the two countries will be suspended from February 24—and affected passengers will receive a full refund for their tickets—Rossiya will fly to Cuba on February 15 to transport Cuban nationals who are in Russia. For its part, Nordwind joined this evacuation scheme with a flight that departed from Moscow at noon on February 12 and will fly back with the evacuated Russian citizens at 4:15 p.m. (local time) this Friday. This airline will operate other flights from Varadero on February 14 and 18.
