Chest slaps and two-handed sprints: the behind-the-scenes footage of “Physical Ability 100 Mexico” is even more captivating than the show itself
The reality TV show *Habilidad física 100 México* has become a huge phenomenon just a couple of days after its premiere, and the “behind-the-scenes” footage of the contestants—even after the Netflix cameras have stopped rolling—has captivated social media users. The participants have recorded the content themselves: soccer challenges, chest slaps like in Mexican wrestling, pull-up contests (a gymnastics exercise that involves lifting the body while hanging from a bar), two-handed sprints, and even a chair to the head have all been captured on video. On September 16, Netflix premiered the Mexican version of the reality show *Physical: 100*, originally produced in South Korea and released in January 2023. When the show debuted, it sparked controversy due to its resemblance to *Squid Game*, a South Korean thriller series—also produced by Netflix—in which hundreds of people must overcome challenges to, quite literally, stay alive. That is precisely the premise of *Physical Ability 100*. Fortunately, here the loser simply goes home, and the winner takes home three million pesos (about $174,000). Among the 100 Mexican participants are former soccer players Luis “El Matador” Hernández and Carlos Salcido; wrestlers Místico, Atlantis Junior, and Soberano Junior; Olympic athletes such as Patrick Alexandre (rower), Jahir Ocampo (diver), Liliana Ibañez and Miguel de Lara (swimmers), Ceci Tamayo (runner), Brandon Díaz, Aldo Gutiérrez, Dulce Velázquez, Jane Valencia, and Ámbar Garnica (wrestlers); as well as individuals from a variety of professions, such as Eduardo Sánchez (police officer) and Luis Hans (firefighter); Marcelino Padilla, Jesús Cárcamo, Francisco Bolaños, Alonso Xopin, and Manuel Vázquez (army soldiers); and some influencers and content creators such as Freddy Bautista, known as “El albañil legendario”; Jorge Iván Hernández, known as “Sonrix”; Mau Otero and Daniela Fainus, to name a few. “Hey, seriously now. You guys look like monkeys straight out of the jungle,” says a woman from the production team who’s trying to control the flailing arms and chaos the participants have created between takes. “Uh. Uh. Uh,” responds Ronaldo Lazy Boy Rodríguez, a professional mixed martial arts fighter (with a record of 17 wins and three losses by decision), imitating the sound and gestures of a gorilla, and the others join in. Then, laughter erupts. “That’s what happens when you put 100 Mexicans together,” Lazy Boy says later, and his crew cheers. “The World Cup and Netflix aren’t ready for Mexico,” says a voiceover in the video. Chavira —spoiler alert— says he felt disappointed after struggling for four minutes and failing at his mission: to keep hold of a ball. However, he adds that he now feels happy thanks to the support of the people, and fondly recalls how content creator Isaías Páez shouted at him from above the battlefield: “Smile, raise your arms—you have to feel proud. You gave it your all.” The season has nine episodes, but only seven are available on Netflix at the moment. The final two episodes will air on Wednesday, September 23, according to the platform’s announcement. The airtime has not yet been confirmed.
