An officer from Directorate I of the Republican Guard prevented a robbery of a delivery driver at the intersection of Florencia and Aparicio Saravia streets, according to the Ministry of the Interior. The incident occurred Wednesday morning in the Punta de Rieles neighborhood. The victim, a delivery driver on his way to work, was intercepted by two men who were also riding a motorcycle; one of them was carrying a firearm. The assailants demanded that he hand over his belongings, but a police officer passing through the area noticed the situation. The Republican Guard officer identified himself and ordered them to stop. According to police reports, the assailants fired at the officer, who repelled the attack by returning fire. Following the exchange of gunfire, those involved fled on a motorcycle. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. An inmate died on Wednesday morning at the Santiago Vázquez Prison Complex (formerly Comcar) after being stabbed in the chest with a knife. According to the National Institute of Rehabilitation (INR), the crime occurred during the prison’s communal hours, when an altercation broke out among inmates. During the altercation, prison staff intervened and requested medical assistance for one of the inmates involved.
