Canobbio missed, Pumita Rodríguez scored his penalty, and Vasco da Gama advanced to the final of the Copa do Brasil: watch it here.
Editorial El País Vasco da Gama had to suffer until the end, but achieved its goal: qualifying for the final of the Copa do Brasil. It had to go to penalties, as Flumiense equalized the tie by winning 1-0. However, from the 12-yard spot, the Uruguayans took center stage to ensure that the Gigante de la Colonia reached the decisive match for the tournament. Flu, with Agustín Canobbio in the starting lineup and Facundo Bernal on the bench, took to the Maracanã pitch with the intention of leveling the tie and, perhaps, winning it without having to go to penalties. They achieved the first part because they had lost 2-1 in the first leg. The goal that tied the tie between Fluminense and Vasco da Gama came in the 36th minute. After a good through ball from Argentine Luciano Acosta, Canobbio got behind his marker, threw himself to the ground to send in a low cross, the ball rolled across the area, and Paulo Henrique put it into his own net to make it 1-0. Vasco da Gama, who started with Uruguayan José Luis Rodríguez and left Mauricio Lemos out of the squad, tried everything to get the equalizer that would send them to the final of the competition. However, they were unable to overcome the formidable obstacle that was 45-year-old goalkeeper Fábio. One of the experienced keeper's best saves came in stoppage time in the first half. Defender Robert Renan took a great free kick and Fábio, after a spectacular dive, managed to send the ball to the corner. It should be noted that at the start of the second half, Argentine coach Luis Zubeldía sent Bernal onto the field. The score remained unchanged and the winner was decided on penalties. Canobbio took responsibility for taking the fifth penalty and missed for the home team, while for Vasco da Gama it was Pumita Rodríguez who took the ball and sent it into the net to spark wild celebrations as they secured their place in the Copa do Brasil final. Thus, Fernando Diniz's team will face Corinthians to determine the 2025 Copa do Brasil champion.
