Facundo Correa's interest in mathematics began when he was a child. His father would pose small math puzzles for him: first the answer to 3 + 4, then more complicated problems to “step it up a notch,” which fostered his interest in numbers over the years. In 2023, Correa signed up for the Math Olympiad, beginning a process that would lead to his selection for this year’s competition. This isn’t the first time the student from Dámaso High School has participated in a competition of this kind: he previously represented Uruguay at the 2024 and 2025 Rioplatense Olympiad, earning an honorable mention in both instances, and also at the International Mathematical Summer Camp, where he won a bronze medal. Beyond his previous experiences, Correa views the competition as a new challenge. “It means a lot to me because I’m studying much harder and preparing much better to go. That helps me grow personally. The other part is that it’s going to be a wonderful experience that I’ll probably never get to have again, and I hope to learn a lot from it and enjoy it,” he said in a video produced by ANEP. The young man has been preparing alongside his delegation—which includes Juan Martín González, a Colonia graduate who has already participated in this competition in 2025—since April 27 at Espacio Colabora.
