Rise in Diesel Prices: Freight Carriers Estimate Price Increases of Up to 3.5% and Warn About the Viability of Their Businesses
The Inter-Association of Professional Freight Transport (ITPC) estimated that the 7% increase in the price of diesel, effective as of October 1, will result in rate adjustments ranging from 1.5% to 3.5%, depending on the type of service and vehicle, and warned the executive branch that the sector has limited room to absorb the rising costs without jeopardizing the viability of companies. “It is essential that, regardless of the current economic situation, the tax burden on diesel be reduced, as well as other cross-subsidies for related products and activities, which constitute the structural foundations of the high cost of fuel for production in the country,” the association stated in a press release, adding that, “freight transportation has limited room to absorb these fluctuations without jeopardizing the viability of companies.” Since last Thursday, the price of 50S diesel—which is used primarily in the industrial and freight transportation sectors—has risen by 7%, from 58.68 pesos to 62.79 pesos per liter. “The decision is part of the strategy adopted since April to cushion the domestic market from fluctuations caused by international prices of oil and petroleum products, stemming from the conflict in the Middle East,” the Executive Branch stated in a press release published on Wednesday. “Although in this instance the adjustments were below the reference prices published by Ursea, the inter-association group reaffirms the need for the Executive Branch to monitor the international situation to contain upward pressures on diesel prices, in order to prevent their effects from spreading throughout the rest of the economy,” the ITPC stated. The inter-association group emphasized the importance of maintaining a “transparent framework” for fuel price setting through the publication of the PPI and the PVP. “This predictability is key for companies to be able to plan their operations on a sustainable economic and financial basis,” the statement concluded.
